Autobiography인 "A Tale of Love and Darkness"에 이어 두번째로 읽은 Amos Oz.
역사는 얼마든지 새롭게 해석될 수 있고, 같은 시대를 살며 다른 의견을 말하는 사람은 반역자(traitor) 또는 시대를 앞서가는 사람으로 해석될 수 있음을 말한다.
Schmuel Ash는 "유대인의 관점으로 본 예수"에 관한 논문을 준비하는 대학생이고, Shealtiel Abravanel은 Ben-Gurion의 시대에 유대인과 아랍인의 평화적 공존을 주장하는 dreamer이다.
Judas는 예수가 틀림없이 기적을 행할 것이라는 믿음으로 그를 Jerusalem으로 데려가 십자가에 매달리게 하는 역할을 하고, 예수가 매달린 십자가에서 걸어내려와 새로운 세상을 열 것이라는 것을 믿은 유일한 제자이다. 예수의 죽음과 함께 그의 믿음도 끝이나고 그는 예수가 저주한 무화과 나무에 목을 매어 죽는다.
Schmuel는 Judas가 처음이자 마지막 Christian이라고 말한다.
Atalia가 Schmuel에게 집에서 나갈 때가 되었음을 말하며, 시편(Psalms) 103:16
그것은 바람이 지나가면 없어지나니 그 있던 자리도 다시 알지 못하거니와 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.
의 마지막 한 문장을 인용하는데, 이 16절이 이 소설 아니면 우리 삶의 모든 것을 말하는 것처럼 다가온다.
소설의 마지막은 희미한 작은 희망마저 순간에 사라져버린 황량한 회색의 길 한복판에 Schmuel을 남겨 놓는데, 그는 무엇을 해야할지 어디로 가야할지를 모른채 망연히 길 위에 서있다.
"She seemed pleasant, gentle, perhaps even cheery. He decided to approach her, to beg her pardon, to ask her advice, where should he go, what should he do? But while he was sill searching for suitable words, the woman finished hanging out her blouse, closed the window, and vanished. Shmuel stayed where he was, in the middle of the empty roadway. He lowered the kit bag from his shoulder. He placed it on the dusty asphalt. Carefully he laid the coat, the stick, and the cap on top of the kit bag. And he stood there, wondering"
