다른 소설 작품들과는 상당히 다른, 지난 번 읽은 Flight와도 다른 작품.
제목은 William Blake의 시 "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell"의 한 구절 "In seed time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy. Drive your cart and your plow over the bones of the dead."에서 가져왔다고 했고, 각 chapter 시작마다 Blake의 시 한 문장을 인용해 놓았다.
아주 특별한 괴짜(?) Character의 매우 다른 이야기인데, 읽어가는 중에는 특별한 감동을 느끼지 못한다. 다만, 책을 덮고난 다음 중간 중간 생각이 나는데, 무심히 page를 펼치면 그 곳에 무언가를 생각케하는 문장이 있다.
As I gazed at the black-and-white landscape of the plateau I realized that sorrow is an important word for defining the world. It lies at the foundation of everything, it is the fifth element, the quintessence.
(고원의 흑백 풍경을 응시하다가 난 슬픔이 세상을 정의하는 중요한 말이라는 것을 깨닫게 되었다. 슬픔은 세상의 모든 것의 기초를 이루며, 제5원소이고, 정수이다.)
1/4쯤 지나면 Dizzy라는 인물이 설명하는 긴 문장이 있는데, 아마도 작가가 이 작품을 통해서 하고 싶은 말이었을 수도 있겠다.
... that in a small bookshop in the Czech town of Nachod he found a nice edition of Blake, so let us now imagine that these good people, who live on the other side of the border, and who speak to each other in a soft, childlike language, come home from work in the evenings, light a fire in the hearth and read Blake to one another. And perhaps, if he were still alive, seeing all this, Blake would say that there are some places in the Universe where the Fall has not occurred, the world has not upside down and Eden still exists. Here Mankind is not governed by the rules of reason, stupid and strict, but by the heart and intuition. The people do not indulge in idle chatter, parading what they know, but create remarkable things by applying their imagination. The state ceases to impose the shackles of daily oppression, but helps people to realize their hopes and dreams. And Man is not just a cog in the system, not just playing a role, but a free Creature. That's what was passing through my mind, making my bed rest almost a pleasure.

(체코의 소도시 Nachod를 방문했다가 작은 서점에서 Blake의 멋있는 시집 한 권을 발견했는데, 이렇게 상상해 봅시다. Poland 국경너머에 살고있는 서로에게 부드럽고 아이와 같은 언어로 말하는 이 선량한 체코 사람들은 저녁에 일터에서 돌아와, 벽난로에 불을 지피고, 서로에게 Blake를 읽어줍니다. 만약 Blake가 아직도 살아있어 이 모습을 본다면, 우주에는 아직 멸망하지 않은 곳들이 있고, 세상은 뒤집어지지 않았으며, Eden은 아직도 존재한다고 말할지도 모릅니다. 여기서는 바보같고 완고한 이성의 법칙이 아닌 사랑과 통찰이 사람을 지배합니다. 사람들은 잡담에 빠지지도 않고 아는 것을 과시하지도 않으며, 상상력을 적용하여 놀라운 것들을 창조 합니다. 국가는 억압의 족쇄를 부과하기를 멈추고 희망과 꿈을 실현하도록 돕습니다. 사람은 시스템의 단순한 부속품이 아니고, 하나의 주어진 역할을 하는 것도 아닌, 자유로운 창조물 입니다. 내 마음을 관통하는 이런 생각들이 침대에 누운 나에게 기쁨을 가져다 줍니다.
오직 아픈 사람만이 진실로 건강한 것이 아닐까 때때로 나는 생각 합니다.
어쩌면, Albert Einstein의 이 quote가 매우 적당할지도 모르겠다.
Solitude is painful when one is young, but delightful when one is more mature.
